DIY Soy Wax Candles

Homemade candles are super easy to make and quite a fun little activity. Candles are an extremely popular Christmas gift. This year, instead of dropping too much money at Bath and Body Works or elsewhere, why not try making your own? You can play around with different essential oil blends too! My favourites tend to be anything that smells like trees, or lavender and vanilla.

Soy wax is a much cleaner alternative to synthetic paraffin wax. The soy wax burns cleaner and does not release any toxins into the air. It also burns at a lower temperature, so the candles will last you longer than if you were burning regular paraffin wax.

For this DIY you will need the following:

  • 4 x 250 ml wide mouth mason jars
  • Candle wicks with metal tabs
  • Container soy wax (8 cups of flaked wax = 4 cups of melted wax)
  • Essential oils of your choice (I have included my favourite ones below!)

Start by glueing your wix (with tabs) to the bottom of the containers. Simmer 1-2 inches of water in a medium pot on the stove. Place wax in a double broiler or pyrex glass and slowly melt, making sure to stir occasionally. Once all the wax has melted down, take off the heat. Let wax cool to approximately 120 degrees farenheit (I use a meat thermometer for this). Add essential oils at this point and pour into containers. Let cool till solid (overnight) and then trim the wix.
